Circle in the Dark / Embroidered Bag

This week's Etsy Monday featured seller is the very talented Magda of Handy Hands Corner. She makes gorgeous hand-embroidered bags and the most beautiful batik fabrics. I was introduced to her shop while on the Etsy forums the other day, and instantly fell in love with her work. Her embroidery and batiks are stunning, and I love the minimalistic style of her bags.

Magda has taken a moment to answer some questions about her work and share a bit of her inspiration with us. Without further ado, here's what she had to say.

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I have been doing different kinds of craft since my childhood. I understood it as a sort of playing and it has always been more a side activity then a real work. I sew, knit and embroider because I can concentrate on something in front of me and think at other things at the same time. It is a relaxing activity.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

Talking about embroidery, not very long. I made my first embroidered bag few months ago and I sold it right away. It was in fact very juvenile vork but it is this kind of look that I give to it on purpose, it is actually supposed to look juvenile. Batik is of a much older day, I don’t even remember when I started it, my mum used to do batik so I did too.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

I like how a piece is created in front of my eyes. When I know that I am on the right way. And, of course, the biggest reward is when people like it, are kind of surprised when they see it because they didn’t expect I had been doing something like that at all.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Japanese Sashiko, the style of embroidery, I even admit it straight away in my work. Japanese textile printing, Oriental carpets, Scandinavian folk art, architecture, both old and new, naïve art, minimalism, childrens art, mosaics, strange and bizarre old paintings and prints.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

Talking about craft, I wish I showed that any hand work could be done nicely and without stressing on being worked out, done properly and showing a long practice in it, that few stitches could be beautiful as if it was a complicated embroidery.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Not really. Or everything could be called creative. Playing with blocks with my son? Doodling? Cooking?

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans?

Believe in what you are doing. If you don’t like it, start over. If other people don’t like it and you do, don’t pay attention to what they say.

Wool Room Music - Bowerbirds

This week I wanted to feature an amazing band called the Bowerbirds. They're a trio from North Carolina, made up of Beth Tacular, Phil Moore and Mark Paulson. They're considered "nu-folk", a genre which I'm loving at the moment. I found them on YouTube originally - I'll share the first video I saw of theirs here. Their sound is warm and so rich, with beautiful vocal harmonies and a gorgeous instrumental combination of guitar, bass drum and accordian. Other songs I particularly like are "My Oldest Memory" and "Bur Oak", both of which are from their debut album "Hymns for a Dark Horse." Here's "In Our Talons" - enjoy!

Today I have to privilege to share the incredible work of Mel at Twisted Silver Jewelry. She creates gorgeous wire-wrapped jewelry, unlike anything I've seen before. She combines amazingly creative wire wrapping with stunning gemstones to create absolutely stunning jewelry.

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I have always wanted to be an artist. I would be content for hours with paper and pencil or some other art project. We didn't have much growing up, which forced us to use our imagination. At the age of 5 I heard a friend of my mother's say that he was "getting rid" of his truck. Not knowing any better, I thought he was throwing it away. I proceded to gather all of the neighborhood kids to create a mural which covered EVERY inch of the truck, including the windows. Found objects are great!

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I have been making jewelry on and off for over 10 years, seriously for 5. My father took me exploring through New Mexico and Colorado, introducing me to geology and my interest in gems began then.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

It is very theraputic. I go into a trance and get very relaxed. I get tickled everytime I get complimented, and still don't know how to deal with it.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Every shape, curve, line, and color in nature. Dreams.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

I want my art to give off the positive energy that I put into it. I want the owner to feel better for experiencing it.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

I draw, paint, photograph. I love nature and like to immerse myself in activities like hiking and exploring. I love animals, chocolate and tapas. And of course, anything handmade sparks my fancy.

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans?

Copyright your name. Do all kinds of research, such as material cost, competition, vendors, shows, etc. The more you know the better! Always try something new, and practice, practice, practice.

The Button Drawer (.com)

A couple of weeks ago I ordered some buttons from a site called The Button Drawer. I'm going to pretend I'm not the last person to hear about this site, although I could be totally wrong. I got my order today and I was very impressed, so I thought I'd pass along the info in case it comes in handy for anyone out there searching for buttons!

These are the buttons I needed, desperately, and the reason I found buttondrawer.com in the first place. I used them last year for my crocheted cowls, and when I ran out, the store I bought them from was not able to get any more in stock.

They did order them for me, but they've been back ordered from the supplier for almost a year now! I'd bought more of the yarn already and it's been waiting patiently in my wool room, so I really wanted to get ahold of some more of these buttons, Well, I'm pleased to find that they are the very same ones I used, and there was no minimum order required!

I also got a few each of some different types of buttons to see what they looked like. I really like them both - especially the cross ones. The others are nice and simple and natural looking, and very nice as well.

I was very pleased with my first order from The Button Drawer. My buttons arrived in about 2 weeks to Canada from Colorado, and the order process was quick and painless. I guess the only drawback is that they don't accept PayPal for payment, but I just used my credit card and it was all good! I really like that there are no minimum orders, which allows you to try out different styles without having to commit to buying large quantities.

I've scored a sweet ipod touch for my birthday (thanks Mom)! My old nano gave up the ghost a while ago and I've been without an mp3 player for way too long. I'm very excited, and to celebrate I thought I'd kick off a new little blog feature. Music is my other passion, and I'm always seeking out new bands and artists to get into. I thought I'd share my newest finds (and old favorites) once a week for you all to check out if you'd like. I'll put songs up in the form of YouTube videos, because that's the fastest way to jump right in and listen!

Today I'll start with the very first song I listened to on my shiny new ipod. The band is called Blitzen Trapper, and the song is called Furr (from the album of the same name). They do have other good songs too, but this one is just amazing. For whatever reason, this is the first song I wanted to hear when I turned on the new ipod. The story of my model search

I thought I'd share the story of how I found my new model for my Etsy pictures with you all. I think it'll be of interest either to other Etsy sellers or designers who are looking for someone to model their work, or just to anyone who needs a little inspiration when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone. Here's how it happened...

Last weekend I had arranged to take some pictures of my new knitted items with my best friend, who has been kind enough to model some of my gloves in the past. When the day that we'd arranged to take the pictures came around she seemed like she wasn't feeling up to it, putting it off until it was too late, and I ended up leaving without any pictures. She told me later that she just really doesn't like having her picture taken (at least right now) and although I think she's beautiful, I completely understand how that feels. So, not wanting to pressure I decided I wouldn't even ask again, and would only have her model if she approaches me about it. But, I found myself without anyone to help me photograph my new items, and I was very discouraged because I'd been working so hard to get pieces ready but now I had no way to get them up in my shop.

My boyfriend had suggested a few times before that I should put an ad on Craigslist for a model. I'd been reluctant to do it because I was afraid people would think I was a creep, or worse, that they wouldn't think my work was good enough and no one would respond. But, with no other options, I swallowed my insecurities and put the ad out there. I was shocked by the response I got! Within an hour or so I had an inbox full of headshots and resumes from local girls ranging to absolute beginners looking to build their portfolios, to experienced models whose photos were amazing and very professional. And they were all interested in working with me! One of the first people to respond to the ad was Isis Wright, who I ended up meeting and shooting for my first batch of items. When I first saw her picture I was so excited. Here was someone who had the exact looking I was hoping for. After a few emails back and forth, we set up a time to meet only a few days after I'd placed the ad. I was a little nervous about meeting with a stranger off Craigslist (we've all heard the stories) but I'd gotten a really good vibe from her and vice versa.

We met down on Granville Island on Tuesday and we had a great time shooting. She was kind enough to bring all kinds of clothes for us to use, and she was so enthusiastic about my pieces, it was extremely encouraging for me. It was amazing to photo a so-called "real model". Every time the shutter would click she'd move into another awesome pose, and I got so many great shots. And it was nice to see that she really seemed to enjoy wearing my pieces, and was very comfortable having her picture taken. That's the one difference I found between working with her and working with my friends as I have in the past. I think the pictures really reflect when someone is kind of uncomfortable being photographed, and I've always felt a little bad for having to ask that of my friends, even though they were all very gracious about it. But with that awkwardness gone, we could both have fun with it, and I was able to get some amazing pictures!

This whole experience has given my confidence and enthusiasm a much needed boost. I never expected when I placed my Craigslist ad that I would get the kind of positive response I did, or that someone I didn't even know would be willing to donate their time and talents to work with me. I am so glad that I put myself out there, even though it was uncomfortable to do at first. It was incredibly validating to have so many people come forward to work with me. I've gone from having no options and no momentum to having an amazing model and a renewed dedication to my shop and my work. I'm very grateful to Isis, and to my boyfriend for the idea. If anyone is interested in placing a similar ad would like to know what I said in mine, feel free to contact me! This has really shown me that great things can happen when you take a bit of a risk, and I'm so glad I did this!

New for Fall!

I'm very excited to have listed the first of my new Fall items in my Etsy shop! Thanks to my wonderful new model, Isis Wright, I now have some great pictures to show them off. It's hard to resist the temptation to list them all at once, but in order to be noticed among all the great artists on Etsy, it's better to spread them out a bit. Here are the first two, which went up in my shop yesterday and today!

Cream Baby Alpaca drop stitch scarf

I can't even begin to describe how soft this yarn is! It is pure luxury against your skin. I plan to make more of these in quite a few colors in the next little while!

Brown Alpaca/Kid Mohair lace shawl

I love Fall colors, and this shawl is perfect for keeping out the chill now that the nights are getting colder. I used a razor lace pattern (one of my faves) to add some feminine detail without making it too frilly. We also photographed this shawl in olive green, which will be in the shop early next week.

I am so glad to have found Isis and I seriously cannot stop knitting now! I'll be writing more soon about how I met Isis and the great things that can happen when you step outside your comfort zone.

My first shoot with Isis Wright

Yesterday I had the privilege of meeting with model/actress Isis Wright to photograph my new pieces for Fall. I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am to have someone of her beauty and talent to represent my pieces! It was an absolute treat to work with her, both in terms of the shots we got and the vibe we had with each other. I was a little nervous to meet and shoot my first "real model" but she is such a genuine person and really seemed to enjoy wearing my pieces, and I felt extremely comfortable with her. I am looking forward to working with her again in the future, and my mind is racing with new project ideas! I thought I'd share a few of my favorite shots from our session. I'll start listing these pieces in my Etsy shop this afternoon, and continue over the next few days! I could say a lot about each of these photos, but I'll let them speak for themselves.

Wonderful Warm Earth Tones on Etsy

I was able to snag a treasury on Etsy last night and I thought I'd share it here as well! I'm a huge fan of earth tones, especially this time of year.

In other news, I think I've secured a new model for my knitwear! I'm very excited :) Up until now I've relied on convincing my friends to pose for me and I run into obstacles when they're either not available, or uncomfortable doing it. Either way I don't want to be pushy and overstep my bounds with the people I care about. The result is that I'm sitting on about a dozen new items with no way to get them up in my Etsy shop, at precisely the time of year when they need to be in there! I finally took the advice of my brilliant boyfriend and placed an ad on Craigslist yesterday looking for local models. I received about 10-15 emails over the course of the day! I felt a little bit like Tyra Banks with these girls sending me head shots and resumes - it was a little weird but very exciting. I contacted one of the first people who responded to my ad and she seems really cool. She's really excited about helping out a local designer, and she's enthusiastic about fashion so she's going to bring a car full of clothes to play with for the shoot. Nevermind that she's gorgeous! There's also another girl that I'm going to meet with for the next batch of stuff that I have ready. In my experience it's good to not put all your eggs in one basket, especially since I really don't want to be a pain in the butt for these girls. Anyway, I'm getting really excited about filling up my shop now. I should have some photos to share from our session tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Late night knitting success and a blog feature!

I stayed up knitting till 3am last night. I'm liking this enthusiasm! I've had some delicious chunky Baby Alpaca in my stash for a while and I wanted to come up with a project for it. It's the same yarn I used last year for my button up cowls, but I've always wanted to use it for a full-length scarf as well. I wanted something simple that would showcase this amazing yarn and accentuate its softness. Yesterday during my brainstorming session I decided I would try a simple drop stitch scarf. I cast on and finished last night (hence the 3am bedtime!) and was very pleased with the results.

It's such an understated stitch pattern and it traps a LOT of air in the scarf, which makes it light-weight but really warm. I love it! When I planned to make this proto-type I thought I only had one skein of cream left in this yarn. But when I went to get it from my stash I was pleasantly surprised to find I had one each of blue and black as well! I'm going to knit those next and hopefully include them in my photo shoot this weekend. Then I'll head down to 88 Stitches, where I saw lots of scrumptious colors!

I had another nice surprise today when I found out I'd been featured on FoundHandmade.com. My "Diamond in the Rough" gloves were included in a great collection of fingerless gloves found on Etsy. Very cool! I hadn't seen this site before and I'm really glad to have found it - it looks like a great site for discovering new treasures on Etsy!

All in all this has been quite a productive and encouraging day!

Getting back on track

This is just a quick post because I'm really trying to get in the habit of blogging regularly. Hopefully the quality of the posts will improve once I get back in the swing of things! I wasn't able to photograph my knitted shawls and neck warmers on the weekend as I'd hoped, but they're all blocked and ready to go. I probably won't get another chance until this weekend now, but in the meantime I've got my mother-in-law's camera to familiarize myself with. And I've cast on for another cowl, so I'll get that ready for the weekend as well.

Last night I finished another pair of gloves and put them up in my Etsy shop this morning. I really enjoy these gloves as a quick and satisfying knit. I've stocked up on all the colors I used last year so I can restock the shop with those while I'm waiting to photograph the new stuff, as it's looking a little bare. Then, I think I'll pick up a few more colors of the merino I use for the gloves and try out a new pattern I've been playing with. There's no such thing as too many gloves this time of year I think! Here's the pair I finished last night.

Today I'm going to head over to my favorite coffee shop to have a little planning meeting with myself. I like to go somewhere away from home to do my brainstorming and scheduling for my Etsy stuff because it allows me to cut down on distractions and really get some concrete ideas down. After that I think I'll do the housework so the place is nice and clean when my boyfriend get's home from work. It always makes his evening a little more pleasant when he comes home to a nice house.

Also, I got inspired by a fellow spinner's blog post to get my butt back to behind my wheel, so I may do a bit of spinning today. I've got one yarn on the go, and a queue of fiber waiting to be spun, so I think I'll dig in. Hopefully I'll have some yarn pictures to share soon!

Camera set-backs, power knitting and yarn store excitement

I am so ready for Fall. We've had a couple of cooler days and I've been bit by the knitting bug again, big time. I've been working feverishly on new items for my Etsy shop... and then staring at them in frustration because I don't have a camera to photograph them. My camera bit the dust during the summer when I was at a music festival for the weekend. It didn't get damaged, it just stopped working. It won't turn on now even with brand new fresh batteries. Apparently it's a common problem with this model of camera (note to self: research technical issues before buying next time). The good news is, my birthday's coming up in less than a month and a new camera is at the top of my wish list. The bad news is that my birthday's still almost a month away, and I'd really like to get my Fall pieces listed now (insert foot stomp here)! Luckily my mother-in-law has come to the rescue. She's lending me her sweet digital SLR camera to use this week! So now I'm getting excited - I'm weaving in ends, blocking and getting props ready!

In the meantime, I started making some more of the fingerless gloves like the ones I sold last year. I had some of the merino yarn left in my stash, and the pictures ready to go, so I thought I could get some of those listed in my shop while I figured out my camera situation. I've been averaging a pair a day for the last part of the week! Although I still really like the styles I had available last year, I'm also planning to design a couple new styles for 2009. Here's one of the first pairs I made this year.

Yesterday I went to a new yarn store called 88 Stitches in Walnut Grove, Langley. I'd heard good things about it but hadn't visited yet myself. It's not too far from my house but far enough that it warrants its own trip and isn't on the way to anywhere I would normally be going. I'd seen on their website that they carried a yarn that I've been using, which my normal yarn store has sold out of, so I thought I'd make the trek and check it out. I am so incredibly glad I went! It is absolutely amazing. "Favorite" is such a dirty, exclusive word, and I still love my usual stores with all my heart, but this was so far beyond my expectations I was actually a little shocked! They carry all the yarns I've used in the past, in colorways I didn't even know existed. And they've got yarns I haven't seen locally before. You know those movies where someone represses a traumatic experience until something triggers the memory, and then everywhere they look they have these vivid flashes in rapid succession? Well, that's what it was like. With every new yarn I saw, new projects and ideas flashed in my mind. I was inspired (and a little overwhelmed)! There were some really great merino yarns that I'm going to work into my plans for cowls, gloves and mittens. And one thing that really caught my attention was this unbelievably soft lace weight cashmere, hand-dyed by the owner's daughter in some of the most gorgeous colors I've ever seen. I'm going to make some lace scarves out of that for the Spring I think. I need to pace myself, and take some time to absorb what I've seen there. For now I picked up this wonderful Malabrigo merino yarn, which is already well on its way to becoming a new neck warmer!

It's so nice to feel excited about my knitting again. The urge to drop everything and run to grab my knitting is back in full force, and at night I fall asleep thinking of new stitch patterns and brainstorming project ideas. Some people in my life don't get it, but I refuse to apologize for my obsession because it is so rewarding! I really can't wait to photograph the stuff I've got done and put it out there for the Etsy world to see. Hopefully this weekend or Monday I'll get a chance to meet up with my best friend / model and take some pictures.

Playing Catch Up

This is just a quick post to say hello and let folks know I'm still alive and well. I've decided it's time to renew my blogging efforts (again). I have let it slide once more since I haven't really been doing a whole lot in the way of crafts this summer. For one thing, the record heat we've been having has not exactly made me want to have hot wool in my hands, and pretty much all of the things I do require me to do that in one form or another. Also, I've actually been quite busy with personal stuff this summer, from weddings to music festivals to family reunions. It's been a lot of fun, but it'll be nice to ease into Fall and a pace that's a bit more relaxed. And I'm really looking forward to dedicating more time and energy to my crafts and my Etsy shop again. I'm working on some great pieces for Fall - mini-ponchos made from Alpaca and Mohair and squishy, colorful Merino neck warmers are the first of many warm snuggly things to come. I love Fall and Winter for the chance to really explore my knitting and spinning, and I can't wait to get going again!

In the meantime, I've said that I want to make this blog a bit more personal and offer a whole view of myself, my thoughts and my life. So I am going to do some posts that aren't necessarily related to Etsy. I'll probably start by writing about the things I've done this summer. There's no time limit on telling stories of fun times, right? Thanks to those who still read this sad little blog... I hope to have more interesting posts coming at you soon! Wish me luck!

Green Means Go - Handspun SW Merino yarn

It's taken a little while but I've finished the yarn I was working on spinning from my own hand-dyed roving. I'm really pleased with the way this turned out!

"Green Means Go" is 179 yards of sport/fingering weight SW Merino 2-ply. So soft and squishy! I've just added it to Black Mustard Colorworks, since it's made from fiber I dyed myself. I'm really liking this color combination!

Next I'm going to try another single-ply yarn. I may start this evening after it cools down a little. Wish me luck!

My first single-ply yarn!

That's right, I finished my first singles yarn and I'm pretty proud of it! Ta-da!

I've been wanting to try making a single-ply yarn but I've put it off because I found it pretty intimidating. I know that to make a decent singles yarn you need to treadle slowly, and I tend to spin at quite a brisk pace. So I didn't know if I'd be able to achieve a nice low-twist yarn. But lately I've been working on being okay with making mistakes. Coaxing myself to try new things even if I can't be sure I'll do them well. I had just received some gorgeous BFL dyed by Kristin at All Spun Up on Etsy, and I couldn't wait to spin it. The colors are quite dark and they're over-dyed on ecru and natural brown mixed BFL so I thought it would be a good fit for a single-ply yarn. I had a feeling that using this for a 2-ply might muddy the colors a bit. Here's a picture of the roving (borrowed from the Etsy listing).

The stars aligned and I managed to produce a yarn that I'm really happy with, especially for my first try. Don't get me wrong - I still love a good squishy, sproingy 2 ply. But I can't believe how soft and fuzzy this yarn is! And it symbolizes a personal triumph for me - I conquered my inner perfectionist who normally would've chickened out. And especially with such gorgeous fiber - I admit I was a little reluctant to risk ruining it. But I pushed on anyway and I'm so glad I did!

Considering it's my first single-ply and the colors are completely "my" colors, I think I'm going to keep this one. This is the first yarn I've spun that I really can't quite bear to part with. It's hard to imagine it with the heat we've been having but I think I'll make a pair of mittens for winter. I want to make something that makes use of the fluffiness of the yarn. And it only gets cold enough for full on mittens a few times a year where I live, so I'm thinking they'll last me forever! I'll be sure to post pictures of them once they're done (probably in the Fall).

I can't wait to try another singles yarn! I'm pretty excited about this so you may see a few singles skeins in my shop soon (although I also just finished the 2-ply SW Merino I've been working on, which will be hitting Black Mustard Colorworks tomorrow). I think I'll make a few more that are pretty uniform in thickness like this one until I get comfortable with the speed, and then I'd like to try to spin a nice even slubby thick-and-thin singles yarn. Relaxing At Home

Today was a gorgeous day and I spent the majority of it outside in my backyard, relaxing and enjoying the sunshine with my animals. I did a fair bit of writing and gained some understanding about the source of the anxiety and stress that have been weighing on me lately. It was one of those moments where you realize the underlying issue at play and see why changing the external circumstances doesn't create any lasting shift in your situation. For me it has to do with remembering to appreciate the moment and not focus on the uncertainty of the future. I don't mean to sound cryptic - I will go into it in more depth in another post because I think it's something that may resonate with some people. For now I'll just say that I made a point of enjoying the day for its own sake today. My pets seemed to appreciate it - they chilled out with me all day and set a great example. I mean, does this guy look like he's worried about things to come?

I also did some spinning today, although not as much as I'd planned. It got really hot in the afternoon and the wool was not working for me, even in the shade. I was working on spinning one of my first dyed rovings, which I thought I had half-finished before. Turns out I wasn't quite done the first bobbin, but I finished that today. I'm really liking these colors - they're turning out very soft and creamy, and I think the final yarn is going to be really pretty. Here's the first bobbin full!

Throughout the day I feasted on the raspberries growing in the front yard. I didn't realize that my mother-in-law (aka my landlady) planted them there last year and I just discovered them recently. I absolutely love eating sun-warmed berries right off the bush in my own yard! There's something so satisfying and wholesome about having food available for free in your own garden. I'd really like to start a veggie garden as well - grow some peas and tomatoes and corn. Yum!

Recharging... with Art!

Lately I've been finding myself in need of some serious recharging and renewal. Without really doing it on purpose, I ended up withdrawing from all the things I normally love doing (knitting, spinning, blogging, etc). And I think it's because I'd managed to turn my hobbies into "work" in the sense that I was starting to feel guilty and stressed out if I wasn't doing them almost all the time. I was putting so much pressure on myself, by turning ideas and goals into obligations and deadlines, until I just had to take a break for a little while. For the last few weeks I haven't done a whole lot in the way of crafts for my Etsy shop - instead I've just been letting myself do whatever interests me. And now I can see things from a different perspective and I think this is exactly what I needed to help breathe new life into my shop and my craft. So, here are some of the things I've been up to...

I've been watching tons of videos on YouTube about art and keeping an art journal. There are lots of great videos and channels dedicated to art but the one that caught my attention first and served as my gateway into the world of art-themed videos was Suziblutube. I especially love her Art Journal Playshop videos, which offer prompts, ideas and inspiration for journal pages. Her enthusiasm for art is so infectious that I had to go out and get a journal for myself. Another really great one is Willowing. Her videos weave together art and spirituality and present the idea of an art journal as therapy, which is exactly what it's been in my experience.

I've been keeping my journal for about 2 weeks now and I am surprised at how much I love it! I've never really considered myself an artist in terms of visual art - I never even had much of an interest in making art. But I have been enjoying it on so many levels. Because of the fact that I didn't know anything about drawing and painting when I started this, I had no expectations of myself at all. It has been so wonderful to allow myself to be a beginner again and to be okay with making mistakes! It's shown me that I need to show myself patience and kindness and compassion, which is something I think I've needed for a long time. I've heard it time and time again - if you're not willing to make mistakes you can never make anything original. There have been moments while I'm painting in my journal that I've gotten so absorbed in the process that I don't even worry about the outcome, and that is something I have not felt in a long time. I'm hoping to bring this same attitude to my knitting, sewing, spinning, etc. because I really do love it and I miss being excited about filling up my shop coming up with new ideas. I think that's going to be the key to getting my enthusiasm back. Trying new things, and being willing to make mistakes. I've got some yarn I don't mind wrecking - it's time to get bold with my knitting!

Anyway, here's a little slide show of my art journal so far. There's only a few pages but I thought I'd show you what I've been doing...

Another thing that really appeals to me about these women on YouTube is that they seem so honest and they share so much of themselves. This is something I've struggled with - finding a balance between being professional in my Etsy shop and sharing personal content on my blog and elsewhere. And with the art I've been making I find I'm able to be more candid because I'm not trying to make a business out of it. And the interactions I've had with some of the other folks on YouTube have been so very authentic and satisfying that I plan to bring some of that transparency into my shop and my blog as well. Right now I'm all about integrating the various facets of myself into a whole representation of who I am and what I'm passionate about. Because afterall, isn't that what drew me to Etsy and the idea of sharing my work online in the first place?

So, I'm going to focus on trusting the process, relaxing into it and being patient with myself. I have lots of great ideas and if I don't get around to them all this season, I'll just have to save them for next year... and trust that the time will be right then. When we exert too much control over the direction we take we can end up missing out on some great twists and turns. Basically I'm beginning to realize that if I stop thinking of my life as being compartmentalized into work and play, productive or non-productive use of time, etc. I can look at everything I do as having value and helping me get to where I want to be.

Now I'm itching to get back to "work" on my Etsy stuff with a new sense of perspective. I'm going to start with spinning because it is in itself a very meditative process and I think it will be a great way to gently get back on track and get myself motivated to do more. I'm about half way done spinning some SW Merino that I dyed myself - one of my very first attempts (the green one) and then I'm going to dive into this amazing roving I got the other day from All Spun Up on Etsy. Isn't it gorgeous?

I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. I'm so glad I gave myself this time to reflect and recharge.

You know how sometimes life just kind of conspires to take over your best laid plans? That's what this past month has been like for me... From other people's weddings to my own unpredictable moods and other random events, I feel like I've just been along for the ride lately. Now that things have settled down a little I'm looking forward to getting back into some kind of routine. That includes regular blog entries and a lot more energy freed up to put into my Etsy shops. I'm actually planning to put some thought into how I want my blog to be set up - I'm looking for a good blend of Etsy-related content (Etsy Monday, shop updates, etc) and more personal, journal type subject matter. I'm looking forward to that too!

For starters, tonight I added a few rovings to Black Mustard Colorworks, the first update in a while. 2 Merino and 2 BFL this time - more fiber coming soon!

More hand-dyed rovings!

Learning to dye has been a hit-and-miss process for me so far - figuring out how to achieve the effects I want and how to work with each type of fiber to enhance their good qualities and avoid felting! It's been a bit slow-going but a LOT of fun and I think I'm narrowing in on a method that will work for me consistently. Updates to the shop so far have been pretty small, as a result I've got a basket of almost-perfect fiber ready to be spun, so keep an eye out for lots of hand-spun yarns coming to the shop!

Today I did another small update, with 2 Super Fine Merino and 1 Merino roving.

Official Guide to the Black Mustard Newsletters

As promised, here is the run-down on the various newsletters available through my mailing list. This is to let you know what will be covered in each of them so you can decide which ones interest you. Feel free to sign up for any (or all) of them by entering your email address in the sign-up form over in the right sidebar. Just leave the boxes checked for the newsletters you'd like to receive and uncheck the ones you can do without.

First we have the general "Monthly Newsletter". This is a basic update that lets you know what's happening at Black Mustard Fiber Arts and Colorworks. It encompasses both shops, so you'll find information about new products from knitwear to handspun yarn to new types of hand-dyed fiber. This is also the place to find out about sales, promotions and contests. Also, check out the "What's coming" section of the newsletter for a teaser about the next month's theme or focus. This newsletter will be sent out on or around the 1st of each month.

Next up is the "Handspun Preview". This is for anyone who'd like to receive a heads up whenever I have a new handspun yarn available. Generally I will send this alert out the day before I plan to list the yarn in either of my shops. It will include pics of the yarn and all the stats, along with the date and time you can expect to see it in the shop. Yarns spun from my own hand-dyed fiber will be for sale at Black Mustard Colorworks, while those from fiber dyed by others will still go into the original shop. This newsletter covers both.

And finally, for the new shop we have the "Hand-dyed Preview". Much the same as the yarn alert, this newsletter will let you know when I plan to have new hand-dyed fiber in the shop. Following the same format, it will have pictures, a listing of fiber content, and the details about when it will be listed. This one will only apply to Black Mustard Colorworks.

I'm so excited to announce the launch of my second Etsy shop - Black Mustard Colorworks! This is something I've been wanting to do for a while now, and I'm really happy to have it up and running. In the new shop you'll find hand-dyed rovings as well as yarns I've spun to showcase my dyed fiber. It's a little sparse at the moment but I'm busy dyeing away to get it stocked up and keep new rovings coming! To celebrate the Grand Opening, I'm offering FREE SHIPPING on all rovings (withing Canada and the US) from May 4-18th!

I'll be happy to combine shipping between shops, and items from either shop can go towards my Buy 3 Get 1 Promotion. Cascade Gloves on Etsy Front Page!

I found out that a couple of days ago my "Cascade" fingerless gloves graced Etsy's front page! A big thanks to Etsy seller AnikaEaster for featuring me in her beautiful treasury!

It made me so happy to see these gloves getting some love. I really like this style of glove but I think I introduced them a little late in the season, when people were already switching gears for Spring. I'm looking forward to making them in all sorts of colors when Fall rolls around again. In the meantime, I've got 2 pairs available, in "Sprout" (shown above) and "Denim", both for 25% off the original price. Now would be a great time to scoop these up because they'll be back to normal in the Fall! Or, if you'd like to make yourself a pair before the cooler weather hits, I also have patterns available in my shop.

Kettle Dyeing #2!

I thought I'd share the results of my 2nd dyeing session! Both are SW Merino and I'm really liking these color combos! I'm still ending up with more white than I plan for, so that's going to be my focus the next time I dye.

Etsy Monday - Krystal Speck

This week's featured Etsy seller is Krystal Speck, who makes beautiful (and functional) ceramics. I love seeing the everyday things we use in life elevated to the realm of art, and I was struck by Krystal's design aesthetic the moment I found her shop.

I love the cheerful simplicity of Krystal's designs, and I think the clean, fresh look of her photography compliments her work beautifully! I found her interview to be an engrossing and inspiring read and I'm so glad she took the time to give us an inside look at her work and her process. Here's what she had to say:

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I've been doing crafty stuff since I was little. My mom is an artist, so she was very encouraging when it came to pursuing a career in the arts. I guess it was a natural progression for me.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I started working with clay in high school, but did not actually consider ceramics as a full-time pursuit until my second year at university. At school I tried my best to do my own double major in Textiles and Ceramics...but now ceramics seems to have taken over my life! Happily I've found many similarities between ceramic and textile design. I love decorating clay surfaces and often find the best inspiration from vintage textile prints.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

Seeing people using my pots is really rewarding. After being in the studio for weeks and producing like a madwoman, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to see the people buying my work and taking it home to become part of their daily lives. I also love meeting other artisans and craft enthusiasts at shows. I just wrapped up the Spring One of a Kind Show in Toronto, and the highlight was meeting all the lovely folks around me. I love the craft community in my city, it's very welcoming and inspiring.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Oh, everywhere! I do a lot of sketching, hoarding scraps of beautiful old printed textiles and collecting of thrifted ceramic cups and vases. I love mid-century Scandinavian and German clay forms and glazes. And overwhelmingly, I find inspiration in the shapes of plants and flowers.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

I hope that my work makes people excited to use their ceramics! I try to make things that are simple and very functional, but also graphic, colourful and fun. I've never really believed in that old rule, that some ceramics are too fancy to use and should only be displayed. Plus, since money is tight for most people these days, when we buy something for our homes we're searching for things that are both beautiful and utilitarian.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

I love to draw. Before I start making a new model I have to sketch first, and I'm always doodling flowers or patterns for new glaze designs. I'm also addicted to blogging and would encourage all makers to start their own blog as well. It's an amazing tool to showcase your art, craft sales and contacts, and it's free! When I have the time I like to sew, and when I have the space (sometimes hard to find in the city!) I love gardening and growing my own vegetables.

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans

I suppose the best advice I can give is just to keep trying, work as hard as you can and you'll find an audience who appreciates your work. I've had people tell me I'm crazy for pursuing an artistic career, especially in recession, but the thing is I couldn't do anything else! I just have to make. Also, make as many contacts with local crafty types and share your knowledge and resources. That might be an obvious one, but being part of a community is so important -- especially if you create your work solo like I do. It reminds you that there are many other artists and craftspeople out there going through the same ups and downs that you are.

Kettle Dyeing!

This weekend I tried kettle dyeing roving for the first time. It was so much fun and I learned a lot from my first trials. I was familiar with the basics going into it, and I'd previously tried painting rovings, with decent results. I consulted a few online tutorials, primarily this one from Earthwhisper Fiber Arts. The most important advice I got from reading this was to add each color separately, letting each one exhaust into the fiber before adding the next. Reading that was a bit of an "Aha" moment for me because I'd always wondered how you can use multiple colors in the same pot without them mixing into a brown soup!

I have to say, I prefer this method of dyeing to painting. It requires much less space and overall I think it's quicker. My blue in the first roving (pictured above) separated into its 2 parts during the dye process, resulting in some pink that was not planned... But that's okay. It was a really good learning experience. I dyed 2 rovings, both SW Merino. I plan to spin them up so I can get an idea of how they'll look, how they'll rinse, etc.

Etsy Monday - Nova Designs

After a brief hiatus from the series due to some family issues (and the time spent playing catch-up), I'm pleased to bring Etsy Mondays back! This week's featured seller is Tess, "the Swede" behind Nova Designs. Tess makes absolutely gorgeous metal work jewelry with a botanical feel that is perfect for Spring! I fell in love with her designs the moment I found her shop, and I'm so glad that she took the time to answer some questions for us.

I love the air of optimism that seems to occupy her whole shop. Tess' interview reveals the same positive vibe and it's a treat to read more about her craft and her outlook on life and art. Here's what she had to share:

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I can't recall a point in time where I realized it. I think I've always been an artist of some sort. Being raised by a single mom that is also a very talented artist really helps to kick start your creativity and imagination. Arts and crafts have always been around me.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I started making jewelry in polymer clay back when I was just a little girl. I used to sell my necklaces at my mothers art exhibitions. I picked up my jewelry making again a few years back and I got more and more interested in metalwork. I am all self taught and It's been quite a journey to get where I am today. I've always loved jewelry and now I get to wear as much as I want!

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

I love challenges and acquiring new skills that I can apply to new designs. I am constantly developing my style and thinking about new ways of doing things. The sky is the limit!

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Everywhere! Driving on my way to work (my day job as a graphic designer). In line at the grocery store... Walking around in nature...

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like to leave that question to be answered by all of you.

I used to do a lot more graphic design, but when it's been your day job for over 10 years, it gets kind of old.. Two things that keeps me sane is snowboarding in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. It allows me to be outside in nature while my mind can wonder freely.

Love what you do and the rest will follow. Don't create to sell. Create what you love.

A New Goal - 100 Items!

I've been in a nice creative mode lately. Between making a whole whack of new headbands and pouches, and fine-tuning the other new ideas I have for the upcoming months, I've really been excited about my work! I've been listing regularly, participating in forum discussions on Etsy and reading lots of blogs. It's been great getting reacquainted with all the awesome people on Etsy and my enthusiasm for my shop has been renewed - it feels really good!

Still, I've noticed myself stalking my own shop, checking and rechecking for sales and other activity. You Etsy sellers know the what I mean - you log on, check out the shop, answer convos, maybe head to the forums, make a few posts. And hey, while you're still on you might as well check the shop again. Maybe read a couple of blogs, check out Ravelry or Flickr or the like. And you never know, maybe something's happened in the shop by now, better check again... and so on until you start to feel disappointed and discouraged that nothing has sold and you want to scream at yourself to step away from the computer! And of course meanwhile all that time could have been spent actually making something! It's okay, you don't have to admit it (but I might feel less crazy if you did!) I know I can't be the only one!

I've decided it's time for me to try a new tactic. I want to enjoy the creative process and the feeling of productivity and stop at that. I don't want to worry about whether or not things are going to sell when I'm making them because it inevitably takes much of the fun and freedom out of the process. So, I've got myself a new goal. Instead of watching my sales so closely I'm going to focus on filling up my shop. I'm aiming for 100 items and I'm really looking forward to working toward that goal. I've got some great ideas for Spring and Summer and I want to approach them whole-heartedly. And hey, if sales are slow, it'll actually be helping me to reach 100 items. Well, I wouldn't go that far, but at least I'll have something else to focus on!

In a similar vein, I'm reading a GREAT book right now called "Your Money or Your Life" by Vicki Robin & Joe Dominguez. It's all about changing your relationship with money and work, and (among other things) recognizing the value of the unpaid work that you do in your life. The book is basically set up like a course, and I'm just reading it through once to get a broad view before I start in on the program. I plan to start a new series on my blog to share any insights I gain in the process of working through the book in earnest. For now, in order to help escape the craft=sales trap, I'm making a point of noticing all the things I get from selling on Etsy that have nothing to do with money. Like the chance to get to know so many great people and talented artists, and the encouragement and kindness of other sellers, or being a part of a movement that is questioning the mentality of our society and working to re-educate people on the value of handmade art. These are just a few of the many benefits of Etsy, the ones that are available whether sales are up or down.

I'll leave you with an excerpt from the book, about a study conducted on apes that fits perfectly with what I've been thinking about lately.

"In The Biology of Art, zoologist Desmond Morris tells of an experiment in introducing the "profit motive" to apes. The first step was teaching them to be artists and to produce drawings and paintings that were decidedly lovely. Once their "art" was established he began to "pay" them, rewarding them with peanuts for their work. Under the reward system their artwork quickly deteriorated, and they began turning out hasty scrawls just to get the peanuts. "Commercialism" destroyed the apes as artists and got them scrambling for the peanut instead."

Cherry Blossom - Light brown needle felted pouch

I've just added a new needle felted pouch to my Etsy shop! This is the first one I've made in quite a while and I had forgotten how much I love working with this medium!

I'm so happy with the way this one turned out! Cherry Blossoms are the perfect thing to get me thinking Spring. I used silky Kid Mohair locks for the blossoms and dark brown merino wool roving for the branch. I had a bit of difficulty finding a lining fabric that went well with the design, but in the end I used an earthy batik cotton that I think works perfectly!

There will definitely be more needle felting hitting the shop soon! I love the forgiving nature of the craft, the way I can shape and re-shape the roving before committing to the final placement allows for the design to come about in a very fluid and organic way. No wonder I do so many trees and branched - the roving practically begs for it! I've got another few pouches knit up and felted, just waiting for the needle felting. Also, I plan to make some needle felted cuffs in the next couple of weeks!

My "Black Sakura" headband has been featured in an absolutely gorgeous Cherry Blossom themed treasury on Etsy today, thanks to seller aurorafedora.

Although I always appreciate being included in treasuries, I don't often share them on my blog, the exceptions being the few times I've made it to Etsy's coveted front page, or the ones that really stand out for me. This treasury is one of those! I love every piece in this collection and overall it is just so pretty and Springy that I couldn't help posting it here.

So, I'd like to thank aurorafedora for including me in this beautiful treasury! Her shop is great as well. She sells handmade greeting cards such as this "Pink and Black valentine." I will definitely be keeping her in mind next time I need to give a special card!

Spring 2009 Headbands

I've just finished photographing the headbands I've made with all the new fabrics I picked up for Spring! I will be adding them to the shop a couple each day for the next week or so. Here are a few of my favorites so far.

I'm totally loving these new prints! Clockwise from top left - "Black Sakura", "First Leaves" in Green, "Flower Child" in Purples, and "Flight of Fancy". I'll be adding these and many more to Black Mustard Fiber Arts this week.

Also, here's a look at how the recycled fabric headbands turned out! These started out as 2 men's shirts and a cool vintage dress. I can't wait to go raid the thrift stores for more goodies like these!

Rediscovering Leisure

Yesterday was another gorgeous day and I feel great for having taken full advantage of the first couple Spring days we've had. On Saturday after I found that cutting up old clothes can be a huge mood booster, I made the most of my motivation and went for an hour-and-a-half bike ride, my first since I packed the bike away for the winter. I rode all through the trails by my house, up to the park and the man-made (but still beautiful) lake there. It was a wonderful first day of Spring.

Yesterday I taught my guitar lessons, did some spinning on the deck, and then met up with my brother for dinner. We had about an hour left of daylight after we ate so we took my guitar and a drum and hung out in a field near my house.

It occurred to me as we were playing songs and enjoying the sunshine that I still felt anxious. I had this nagging feeling that I should be doing something. Like in order to really be making the most of the day and the moment I should either be doing something productive or at least entertaining. I realized that since I've become an adult and been increasingly able to buy different things and experiences I've become increasingly unable to just relax and be.

I used to do it all the time. I would spend hours just sitting outside listening to music, or reading, or writing, or just daydreaming. Now, if I think of doing something outside, it's always something that requires planning ahead and organizing some kind of activity, usually something I pay for. So, I've decided to work on getting back to basics. To allow myself true leisure time, without having to have something to show for it afterward. To focus on the quality of the story of my life instead of just the plot.

I have noticed lately that whenever I am asked to spend time with someone, I immediately run through all the other things I could accomplish with that time. I feel like I have to justify every moment I spend. I can foresee this kind of thinking getting out of hand very quickly, and I know it's already hurt some of the people I love when I am always making excuses why I can't see them. I think in our society "work" always trumps leisure or recreational time, and I really don't want that to be the way I live my life. So, I'm making a conscious decision to reassert my right to leisure and to welcome spontaneity back into my life. After all, if I hadn't agreed to sit with my brother in a field yesterday I would have missed out on this:

Which, as it turned out, was the perfect end to an awesome day.

Recycling / Upcycling to live life softly

On Friday I popped into a thrift store on a whim while driving home from work. I thought it'd be cool to see what kind of things I could find that would be good to cut up and use for fabric. I ended up picking a couple of men's shirts and a cool vintage dress, all of which had small spots and flaws that I figured might keep them from finding good homes in their current forms.

Yesterday I was planning to meet up with my best friend/model to photograph my new headbands, but because my sewing was not as fast as I remember it being, I ended up missing my chance to get together with her. I was feeling pretty bummed and kind of annoyed with myself, and I decided to dig into the clothes and start cutting. I had no idea that simple act of cutting up clothing would have the power to turn my day around! It was so much more fun than I expected it to be. It was the perfect mix of a destructive outlet and creative possibility. And once it was all cut up, I ended up with some great pieces of fabric!

Next time I will definitely wash everything before I cut it, because the way I did it I ended up with quite the tangled mess in the washing machine. But after ironing I have some really nice-sized pieces of totally usable fabric.

I really like this brown and green striped woven looking stuff! I can't wait to see how these look as headbands, and I am already itching to go scour the second hand shops for more finds!

Hurry Up Spring!

These last few weeks have been a bit of a waiting period for me. I've been working on lots of fresh Spring items lately and I'd hoped to share them this month but a couple of things have gotten in the way. First, there's the crazy weather we've been having. We've had some days that feel like Spring is already here, with beautiful blue skies and mild breezes. Those are the days when the inspiration runs high to create pieces for the upcoming season. Then there are the days when I've planned a photo session with my lovely model/best friend and wake up to see a landscape shrouded in grey and big fat snow flakes coming down! What's up with that? Well, I'll give Old Man Winter his last few days but he'd better be gone soon because April will be Spring Fever at Black Mustard Fiber Arts!

Then of course there was my aunt's passing, which has pretty much taken priority. I've been grieving the loss of her and I've gladly given my time to the people in my life who've needed me around. But I am eager to get back to business as usual and I'm hoping that April will be a month of rejuvenation for me and for the shop!

To kick it off I've brought back some of my cotton headbands. I'm bringing out all the best prints from last year, and I'll also have a whole whack of new fabrics coming out in April. These are a couple of my favorites from last summer. I really can't wait to bring out the new prints - I've been having so much fun working with them! Repose

To anyone out there who may be wondering where I've gone to, I've been spending the last couple of weeks close to my family after the unexpected passing of my aunt. She was an extremely sweet woman and I will miss her dearly.

Her death was very sudden and came as a shock to everyone. It has reminded me of the importance of making time to spend with the people you care about. This was the first person in my life to pass away so unexpectedly, and although I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel guilty for not seeing her as often lately as I used to (she knew how much I loved her), I am sorry that I won't be able to add any more new memories to my existing ones with her. So, I'm letting this be a lesson. My priorities over the last couple of weeks have been visiting with family, especially those most affected by these events - my uncle who was married to her for 34 years, and her 2 sons.

I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of things as well though. I've been working on some new Spring items for my shop, and I'll be sending out my newsletter on the 15th of March (better late than never!) to share some of those new ideas with those who've signed up! Until then, I hope everyone is having a wonderful night :)

Pattern - Diamond in the Rough Fingerless Gloves

Well, I had so much fun writing the pattern for my "Cascade" gloves that I couldn't wait to finish my 2nd one. I've just listed a PDF Pattern for my "Diamond in the Rough" fingerless gloves in my Etsy shop.

Next I'll be working on putting together kits for both of these patterns, which I hope to have available within a week or so.

I'm so excited to offer my first pattern for sale in my Etsy shop! I've had a few people request a pattern for my "Cascade" fingerless gloves, and after working on it for the last couple of weeks and reading it about 100 times, it's finally done!

Right now I've got a PDF version available for email, and I'm also planning to put together a kit very soon. The kit will include a paper version of the pattern as well as 2 balls of Mission Falls 1824 SW Merino yarn in your choice of colors. I am so in love with this yarn, and since it's Canadian made I thought this would be a great way to share it with the rest of the world. Look at all these gorgeous colors!

Old Flame - Handspun SW Merino yarn

Well, it's been a little while since I've posted anything new, but it's not because I've been slacking off. I've been planning and working on some great spring wear coming soon to the Etsy shop, and I've been doing lots of spinning! Here's the newest yarn off the wheel, which will be added to the shop tomorrow.

"Old Flame" is SW Merino, DK weight, and incredibly soft and squishy. I love these firey colors, and there is a wonderful play between dark and light in this yarn.

Here's the roving, dyed by Ginny of FatCatKnits on Etsy. I'm a big fan of her colorways, and the fiber is beautifully prepped!

Golden Slumbers - Handspun SW Merino yarn

My newest yarn sold in absolute record time in my Etsy shop, thanks to my having posted pictures on Ravelry. Thanks Ravelry! I thought I'd share photos here because I was really pleased with the way this yarn turned out.

I called this yarn "Golden Slumbers" because the colors remind me of snowy, sleeping woods (and because I love that song). I ended up with 195 yards of fingering weight SW Merino, weighing in at 4oz.

The roving came once again from Kristin of All Spun Up on Etsy. Her colors and fiber never disappoint, and this was no exception. I absolutely loved spinning this yarn!

Cascade - Hand knit wrist warmers

I'm so excited to list the first pair of my new "Cascade" wrist warmers in my Etsy shop today!

I've had a few pairs done for a while now in a handful of different colors, but I had no one to model them for me. I finally convinced my best friend Sam to give it a shot - isn't she beautiful? The best part is she really had fun, so we're going to be doing it again. I'm really looking forward to scouting out cool locations around her house in downtown Vancouver to take our pictures throughout the spring and summer!

These are knit with the same soft Superwash Merino yarn as my "Diamond in the Rough" gloves. I am in love with this yarn - it is incredibly soft and warm and there are so many great colors available. And it's made in Canada, which is very cool! I'm really happy with how these gloves turned out. The eyelet pattern reminds me of a waterfall, hence the name. They're feminine and pretty without being overly frilly.

I'm very pleased to announce that the Black Mustard mailing list is up and running! For those who'd like to be on the list to receive news about promos, new items and more there is a handy sign up form over in the right sidebar of this blog.

There are actually 2 newsletters available to sign up for. The first will be a monthly general newsletter, which will cover shop updates, promos, upcoming plans, etc. If you'd like to receive this email once a month, make sure the "Monthly Newsletter" box is checked when you sign up.

The second is designed specifically to notify folks who'd like to know when I'll be adding a new handspun yarn to the shop. I've had quite a few requests for this since I tend to list yarns on different days of the week and they do sell fairly quickly. The "Live Life Softly" Give-away

Black Mustard Fiber Arts has a new look! One of my priorities since New Year's was to finalize my logo and branding for my Etsy shop and blog, and I'm really happy with the result. So, wherever you find me hanging out online, you'll see the Black Mustard blossom.

I've also come up with a new mantra. Following along the lines of the ideas I talked about in my "Perspective" post, I set out to pinpoint the things that are important to me, the reasons why I do what I do and what I hope to share through my work. To distill everything that I work toward into one powerful statement.

To me this means being gentle with myself and others. It means taking the time to do the things that make me feel peaceful, loving and connected. I think that's why I love knitting and spinning so much. They're relaxing and wholesome. They connect me to a tradition that was borne out of necessity and has evolved into a luxury, and a form of creative expression. There are many other things that make me feel this way: my morning walks, going to yoga classes, playing my guitar and singing with my brother, spending quality time with a friend, or with my cats, doing something kind for someone who doesn't expect it...

As a philosophy for Black Mustard Fiber Arts, it means a renewed commitment to using materials that are eco-friendly and wool that comes from happy, well-treated sheep. I love finding local folks who raise their own animals, and I'm fortunate that the owner of my favorite yarn shop shares my views and only stocks yarns from companies that meet certain industry standards for the humane treatment of their sheep. Living softly includes treading softly and it feels wonderful when I can make something that is good for the planet without sacrificing quality and style. I'm looking forward to exploring the ways that I can apply the "live life softly" philosophy to my work and life.

Chiller - Handspun Merino yarn

I've added a new handspun yarn to my Etsy shop this evening. It's 175 yards, 4.1 oz of super sproingy Merino. I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

While I was watching the colors swirl together, the name "Chiller" popped into my head and I couldn't think of anything more fitting. The colors by themselves are quite bright but there is just enough dark tones of grey and brown to mellow out the colors without turning the yarn "muddy". This is a very relaxed yarn.

The roving is from Sheepish Creations on Etsy. This was the first I've bought from her and it was amazing to spin. Drafted like butter and the colors of course are gorgeous. I will definitely be going back for more!

Etsy Monday - Mizu Designs

This week's featured seller is Kylie Budge of Mizu Designs. Kylie is a talented artist who works with Japanese style woodblock prints, lino cuts and silk screen (to name some of her preferred media). I was struck by her work the moment I saw it and was thrilled when she put aside the time to answer a few questions for my "Etsy Monday" feature.

I think it's great how every one of her designs has a story to tell, and I absolutely love her style and subject matter. Her interview is as interesting as her work itself, and I hope you enjoy reading more about her and her craft. Here's what Kylie had to say...

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I made a point of prioritising printmaking in my life about 11 years ago but I’ve been printmaking on and off most of my life since I was a teenager. Like a lot of creative people it’s something I have to make space for in my life or I feel like I’m denying something that’s core, part of what makes me whole. It took me a long time to be at peace with the part of me that needs to be practical and responsible and allow myself to make time for my printmaking.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I’ve been making Japanese style woodblock prints since 1998 but have been printmaking for longer than that in other styles. I moved to Japan that year and lived in Kyoto for 7 years in total. It was being there that sparked my interest in learning more about the traditional Japanese printmaking method. I found myself an artist who as also prepared to teach me and haven’t stopped really.

In the last few years I’ve also been producing illustrations in the form of giclee prints. It’s all connected for me. To be a printmaker you need to be able to draw, and sometimes I just enjoy going directly there.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

I love everything about printmaking. Collecting paper and experimenting with printing on different kinds is a lot of fun. In Kyoto I could just go crazy in the paper shops. I felt very lucky to have access to that while I was there. All that gorgeous, hand made washi, It’s a printmaker’s dream! And I love the tools used in Japanese printmaking. Fine wooden brushes with horse hair and wooden handle carving knives. And the baren (a flat disc wrapped in a bamboo leaf used for printing).

Carving the blocks is hard work and requires many hours. Sometimes I’m fine with that if I’m in the right head space. But for me printing is much more enjoyable. It’s when all the hard work pays off and when the print comes to life.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Much of my design inspiration comes from Japan and all things wild and natural including indigenous Australian plant life. I love insects, especially dragonflies, and I adore seed pods.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

Mostly I want to find the means to convey in some small way the fragility and beauty of nature and its ephemeral, transitory state. If I can capture that even in a tiny way in my printmaking then that brings me a lot of joy.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Apart from printmaking and illustration I really like to potter around the garden and watch the way a vegetable garden comes to life over summer. I think it’s connected to that idea of enjoying the ever-changing state of things in nature.

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans

If you know that as a person you need to create and it’s part of who you are as a person, then don’t deny it, don’t push it down inside yourself because there’s not enough time, or you have to do other things in your life. Give yourself permission to be in that creative space and find the time somehow. If it’s integral to who you are and how you are in the world, then unless you do this, you’re not going to be whole or happy or balanced and that will unravel you eventually.

Be Mine - Handspun BFL yarn

I've just updated my Etsy shop with brand new handspun yarn, in loverly Valentines shades of pink, red and purple. "Be Mine" is 168 of silky soft BFL goodness.

The roving was dyed by the very talented Lynne at Knitopia / West Coast Colour. If you live locally you should definitely check out her store - it is an oasis of wonderful yarns and hand dyed fiber, located in downtown Langley. I also bought another batch of this colorway for my mom for Christmas, so I can't wait to see how hers turns out!

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

As a child I was already crafting. While my sis and brother were climbing trees, I stayed inside painting, beading and drawing. After my secondary school I went to Art school and became a graphic designer. Since then I've never done anything else than making my living by being creative. I really can't do anything else, I would die if I could not create :-) I had my own graphic design bussiness for 12 years, but stopped with it when my 4th child was born. Now my kids are a little bit older, but I can't go back to a regular job. I have a child with a handicap (Down Syndrome) and one with a learning disability, so I put lots of time in guiding and educating them. But the time that is left is filled up completely with crafting! My online shop is in that way a blessing, I can work at home, I can decide all by myself when I work and craft.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I started making jewelry end of 2007, after a while I had so many pieces that I just could not keep them all for myself. I knew Etsy already, but just didn't dare to join,I was not so sure about my creations. I promised myself to give it a try on my 40th birthday and joined Etsy in April 2008 and wooosh, what I never dared dreaming of happened, I sold immediately and people do like and enjoy my work!

And I am learning every day, I like discovering new techniques and materials, right now I am playing a lot with felt! I like mixing materials and techniques, that's why I have textile jewelry in my shop but also creations with stones, glass beads, vintage findings and polymer clay.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

Sometimes I just match materials and colors, not knowing how it will end, and when I finish then a beautiful piece, I can be very pleased! But the process of creating can also be very satisfying!

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

It depends : sometimes I am inspired by an acorn I find during a walk, or the play of the clouds in the sky (that I see through my work room window), sometimes a song can make me create, or a vintage teapot I come across at the recycling store. But also children books inspire me , I have tons of them, If I like one, I buy two of them, one for the kids and one for myself :-) And let's not forget poetry, I lose myself in reading poetry and I am sure it inpires my work! But entering a fabric, yarn or beads shop can inspire me a too, just seeing color combinations gives me tons of ideas :-) And other things I come across accidentally, a beautiful exhibition for instance or my China tiger shoes collection (my cat brooches are inspired by them), or a book about African Tribe Jewelry...

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

I don't have a message to the world, I just want to bring a beautiful piece, and I am very happy if someone loves it to pieces and enjoys it. That is why I like the feedback on Etsy a lot, good feedback really gives you vibes to go on with it!

I think my art is a kind of self expression. I just need to do that, I am glad there is a world outside that can appreciate what I make.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Oh well, I don't sing and don't play music (one cannot have all the skills :-), But I do try to be creative in my cooking :-) and the way I design my house, Oh, if I had the time.... But I am not only an artist, I am also a mother of four, I think I am very creative in the way that I raise and educate them :-))

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans

Go your own way, try to evolve in what you do, don't create just for selling, that could not be the first aim! Create because you love it, then you'll make the most beautiful art!

Perspective...

I've been thinking a lot recently about the reasons why I decided to cut back at my day job and make a go of selling my knitware, handspun yarns, etc. on Etsy. When you're working in a job that you don't particularly care about, money quickly becomes the primary motivator and the main measure for success in your life. I have coworkers who just can't fathom that I'd give up 40% of my pay cheque to have 2 extra days a week to myself. But I had reached a point where time was flying past me at breakneck speed, each week exactly the same as the last, and I thought, "There has to be a better way to live!" I made the change so I could live a more authentic, fulfilling and pleasant life.

But that ingrained need for financial security can be a hard one to shed. As with most things in life, it takes more than changing the external circumstances to really get at the root of the problem. Especially in the midst of the current economic situation, it's quite easy to succumb to that low level anxiety that we are all conditioned to feel about money, until you realize you've just traded one "job" for another and are in danger of turning your favorite pastimes into "work".

Every once in a while, I am provided with a reminder that I need, and a gentle nudge in a better direction. For example, before Christmas I was researching ways to improve my shop, direct more traffic to it, as well as my blog, and maximize the effectiveness of the time I spend on promoting. I was reading a lot of great tips on the Etsy forums and in the articles of Timothy Adams, who has loads of free advice for Etsy sellers (definitely worth checking out). He's got so many great suggestions in fact that I began to get a little overwhelmed, thinking I had to try them all right away and I was not doing enough to get the word out about my shop. In short I had developed tunnel vision, only looking at things in terms of their marketing effectiveness. There are so many tools available to online sellers and only so much time in a day to make use of them, that I started to get stressed out! And worse, I was spending so much time trying to do everything I could to promote that it was cutting into my actual creative time in a big way. This is what I mean about changing more than the outside situation, because I was starting to look at my Etsy business the same way I had my day job, in terms of profitability instead of enjoyment.

The reminder came when I visited the Etsy forums to post a link to my blog on a blog roll thread. My intention when I posted was to direct people to my blog, but while I was there I also clicked a few of the links to other blogs listed and found myself directed to some unexpected places. Instead of blogs that were devoted solely to self-promotion, I found pockets of the world that reflected the interests and personalities of the writers, and were so interesting and selfless that they shook me out of my stress-induced trance and reminded me of why I'm doing this in the first place. I'm sure there are tons of great blogs like these out there, but I'd like to share the two that really stood out for me that day.

The first is Believe Breathe Birth, written by Etsy seller Bellyblessings, who makes beautiful jewelry inspired by pregnancy and birth. This blog provides "pregnancy & birth affirmations, quotes, journal prompts, ideas & activities for birth preparation and celebrating the childbearing year". The post I read that day struck me as such a positive statement for expecting mothers, and I was impressed by the generosity involved in taking the time to offer it up to the world.

The second blog that caught my eye is MayhemArts' blog, Art, Life, Yoga.... MayhemArts sells beautiful handmade malas (used for meditation or chanting mantras) as well as photopraphic prints and ACEO's of yoga inspired artworks. This blog is so well-rounded that it really opened my eyes to the potential of blogging beyond mere self-promotion. The posts are inspiration and informative, and they really give a sense of the person behind the scenes.

I'd like to thank both of these people for reminding me what's really important and why I wanted to sell online in the first place. There are so many cool people taking part in the "handmade movement" online and it can be just as rewarding to make connections or promote others as it is to make that sale you're working towards (if not more so).

I've put in a lot of effort to get my Etsy shop going, and I'm quite happy with it so far. Although there are always going to be things that I can improve, it doesn't mean I have to get them all done right now. I just need to get beyond this idea that I have to be really successful before I can relax and enjoy this. The time to enjoy it is now. I can put the stress down at any time - I just have to decide consciously to do so. To remind myself that this is what I wanted, and that I've already arrived at where I wanted to be. Now I only need to enjoy the journey. The timing will take care of itself, the sales will come, and things will get done if I just do what I really care about. I'm just trying to find a balance between healthy discipline and productivity and unhealthy stress and worry.

After a bit of a break over the holiday season I'm glad to be starting up Etsy Mondays again! This week I'm featuring Lynne of cozycottagecreations, who creates wonderful 3-D needle felted works of art - like this!

I first came across her work when I was checking out a tutorial on needle felting over in the Virtual Labs on Etsy. I was blown away by her Felted Earth Ball, and when I checked out her shop I found so many more amazing pieces! I love needle felting but I have never tried anything 3-dimensional. I'm always impressed with those who do, and Lynne is extremely talented at what she does. Here's what she had to say about her craft:

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I don't think I ever realized or decided I wanted to be an artisan - it's just my nature to want make things and do it as well as I can. Throughout my life I would rather make something myself than buy it in a store. Sometimes when I go to buy something, because I'm so picky and have a clear picture of what I want, I can't find it! So, I make it myself. I would so love to go back in time and live in the 1800s when making everything you have was just a way of life.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I've been felting for almost two years now. I've always loved knitting and one day an email newsletter from my local yarn store arrived in my in-box with a photo of a felted bowl. I fell head over heels in love with it, and seriously couldn't sleep because I kept turning it over and over in my head. I was leaving on vacation the next day and absolutely had to stop at the yarn store on the way to the airport to pick up the pattern. After telling myself over and over "Do not leave this pattern on the plane....", I actually left it on the plane. So then I had to figure it out for myself, and I've been creating my own patterns ever since.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

I love the figuring it out part, especially in the area of needle felting. Often I see something and my first thought is "I'm going to make that out of wool!". Then my unconscious brain chugs away at the process and my fingers get itchy to get started. I'm happiest when I'm about 2/3 into the process and I can actually start to see my vision form into reality. I also love the sound of the needle felting tool sinking into the wool - it's like the crunch of boots into new fallen snow.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Mostly in nature, and lately at the grocery store. I'm probably the only Mom that tells her kids "Don't eat that apple!" because I'm using it as a model for my needle felting.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

Hopefully that art and beauty can arise from all sources. I have two young daughters and they are always right by my side wanting to know "what are you making?" It's important to me that they know from this pile of wool (which came from a sheep) anything can be created. That the possibilities are endless as long as you have the vision and the patience to bring it to life.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Right now I'm totally obsessed with wool, and I just want to explore every possible thing you can do with it. I always have six other projects running through my head while I'm working. I do also love to sew, and I used to do a lot of it - making quilts, playthings and occasionally clothes for my daughters. However, my sewing has really taken a back seat to my felting. I'm not a very good multi-tasker, and I like to completely exhaust one medium at a time. It might be awhile before I get back to sewing!

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans

Make what you love and put it out there to the world. If you love it to pieces, so will someone else! Persistance and patience are the keys to success in anything you do! And on a practical side, if you're an etsy seller, join a team of like-minded artists and become as involved with that team as you are able. I belong to several teams and am quite active with Boston Handmade and the NaturalKids Team. The support and comraderie I get from these teams has been invaluable to both the growth of my business and my growth as an artist.

Polaris - Handspun Merino yarn

I've just listed a brand new handspun yarn in my Etsy shop. "Polaris" is 188 yards of the squishiest sport weight Merino.

I absolutely love the way this yarn turned out. Blues aren't normally "my colors" but they sure are soothing to spin. And the way the predominantly cool blues and purples are balanced with warm flashes of yellow and brown.

The roving was dyed by the amazing Kristin of All Spun Up on Etsy. As always it was a joy to spin, perfectly prepped with deep, vivid tones. Here is a picture, borrowed from the original listing.

I'm not big on New Years resolutions, but I do feel like now is a good time to set some goals to work toward in 2009. Something about the air of completion and creation that comes with this time of year compels me to take stock of what I've been doing for the past little while and lay out some things I'd like to accomplish in the coming months. Of course a lot of these will be related to fiber and my Etsy shop, but there are a few other improvements I'd like to make as well. As for my blog, I'd like to expand the scope of it to include a some of what goes on in my life outside of Etsy, to share a bit more of what fills my days with all you lovely people. So, here are my main goals, in no particular order:

My main priority for Black Mustard Fiber Arts is to polish my branding, logo, etc. I've got a couple of ideas and I'm hoping to have my artistic boyfriend help me finalize them. From there I can get all my packaging, tags, labels and business cards unified and done up properly. I also plan to take stock of all the online tools I use (Twitter, Flickr, PW, etc) and see how I can maximize their effectiveness while cutting down on some of the time I usually spend surfing once I get started. There are a couple new things I'd like to look into as well, such as starting a YouTube channel and a mailing list. There's also a big development on the horizon in the way of a second Etsy shop... I hope to have that ready to lauch by the end of January! I'd also love to take part in at least one craft fair in 2009.

For myself I've got a lot of your standard fitness goals... I want to get back into taking regular yoga classes and I plan to run 3-4 times per week. I'd also like to research nutrition a bit more. Since I've gone vegetarian I've been feeling great, and I think I'm getting everything I need in the way of protein, iron and such. But I'd like to be sure. Also, now that I'm getting close to the point where children could be a real possibility in the next couple of years, I'd like to kick any unhealthy habits I have so I can lead by example to help them develop a really good relationship with nutrition and exercise. Once the weather gets a little nicer I'm going to start riding my bike and taking the bus to work. I can't wait!

Another big area of interest for me is finding more ways to live in harmony with the world and the universe at large. In the Spring I'm going to build a compost bin in the back yard and get serious about recycling at home. I also plan to find at least one volunteer opportunity this year - to contribute my time and energy to helping someone other than myself or my immediate circle of people. This last year I've been a bit on the isolated side - spending so much time at home working on crafting and building my Etsy business. Although I've enjoyed it immensely, these last few weeks I've really felt a push to get back out into the world and interact with people more. I want to be more open to connecting with others again.

I've got 3 guitar students starting up in January, and I can't wait! My music has been another thing that's been put to the side so I could focus on knitting, spinning, etc. And that's fine, but I do miss it as well. Getting lessons going again will be a great way for me to remember to practice and play on a regular basis, and from there I'd love to schedule a few shows or hit some open mics and maybe write some new songs. I think I may start a YouTube channel for my singing and playing as well. If I do I'll be sure to share the link here.

Well, the holidays have made it difficult to keep up with my blog and my Etsy shop is looking a little sparse, but I've really enjoyed the rest and the time spent with family and friends. I've also been busy trying to navigate this crazy weather we've been having. Vancouver is not used to snow like this and the lack of snow plows in my neighborhood have made things very interesting. This is my back yard as seen on Christmas Day.

I've actually gotten quite a bit of knitting done for the shop - now I just need some time with my "models". I finished a new style of fingerless glove that I'm very pleased with, and I've made pairs in about 3 or 4 colors. I really hope to get a chance to photograph them soon, especially since I got a new camera for Christmas! It's a Fuji Finepix and I've been having lots of fun playing with it and getting comfortable. The biggest perk for me so far is the super macro feature, which I've been using to take shots like this.

There seems to be a bit of a grainy quality to some of the pictures I've taken, which I also read about in reviews (after I'd bought it). However, since most of the shots I've taken so far have been indoors and in low light, I'm remaining optimistic. I'm very eager to try it out in good light. Although I have less occasion to use it, the long distance focus also seems to be very good. 12x optical zoom is very decent for anything I'd need. This shot was taken from my doorstep, across the yard and into the back lane.

Well, my poor little blog has been a bit neglected lately... With Christmas coming I've found the days slipping away more quickly than usual. Happily today I listed a new handspun yarn in my Etsy shop. I named it "Cafe au Lait" because it reminded me so much of the yarn I used for these gloves. This one is 133 yards of squishy worsted weight Falkland 2 ply.

The roving was purchased from FatCatKnits on Etsy. This was my first time spinning Falkland and I must say I loved it! It was very well-prepped fiber and I'm a sucker for browns so I really loved watching the colors swirl together. I will definitely be popping back into this Etsy shop from time to time for more fiber!

Afterglow - Handspun Superfine Merino yarn

I finally finished my fiber from the 2nd All Spun Up spin-a-long. A little behind this time around, since I've been knitting away so furiously over the last couple of months. I love the way this yarn turned out - I had a hard time deciding to list it in my Etsy shop!

"Afterglow" is 184 yards of 2 ply DK-light worsted weight handspun. The fiber was dyed by Kristin of AllSpunUp on Etsy. As always, the colors are incredible, and the Superfine Merino was a joy to spin. The yarn is soft, spring and super squishy!

I found her in the forums on Etsy a few weeks ago and have been taken with her amazing shop ever since. I've featured her in a couple of treasuries, and I keep popping back in to check out what she's been working on. My favorite piece has got to be this incredible mosaic guitar. I can't imagine the time and patience that went into turning this old guitar into an amazing mosaic masterpiece! I couldn't resist including a nice big picture of it here. I asked Lisa to answer a few questions to help us get to know her a little better. Mosaics have always fascinated me, so it's very interesting to read more about her craft. Here's what she had to share!

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I think I was predetermined to be an artist. My father is an accomplished sculptor and passed on that artistic gene to me. One of my very first memories is of a fish I made out of construction paper in Kindergarten. It was for a sea mural for the wall. The teacher loved it and I think that is when I knew that art would always be a part of my life. I was so damn proud of that fish!

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

I’m not a big fan of the color blue (for decorating) but for some reason, blue glass always intrigued me. So I started taking some stained glass classes at a local shop about 10 years ago. I enjoyed it but being a perfectionist, I found myself getting disenchanted. Not being able to make those solder lines perfect frustrated me to no end! Fast forward 6 years and I found mosaics quite by accident. Because I am a starving artist, I work at a restaurant waiting tables. We have about 70 feet of windows with a 10 inch sill. The chairs hitting the edge of the sill and the moisture from the windows sweating, were causing the plaster to break off. It looked horrible. I suggested a tile mosaic to fix it and next thing I knew.... I was making it! While researching how to do that project I found some truly amazing artists who pushed the envelope on what most people think of when they hear the word “mosaic.” I couldn’t wait to experiment with the glass I already had and find my little niche in the mosaic world.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?
Taking shards of glass that alone look like nothing, and putting them together to make a picture or a design, fascinates me. Also, the endless choice of materials that you can use for mosaics. Though I love the sparkle of stained glass, using other materials such as marble, porcelain tile, pebbles and semi precious stones (just to mention a few) give dimension and drama to my work. Also the fact that you can mosaic just about anything! My work can be out in the garden, hanging on a wall or adorning your body. The only thing that stops you are the confines of your imagination.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

I am surrounded by shelves of jars, trays and boxes of my mosaic material which inspire me when I walk into my studio. I usually don’t plan out my designs, I’ll pick a color scheme first and then just go through my tesserae, putting pieces together till I like it, then glue it down. Also, other mosaic artists inspire me greatly. There are some that are truly masters at what they do.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

No message really, I’m not that deep!

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Interior and garden design. I am constantly changing things around! When I was younger I would always rearrange the knicknacks in the house creating little vignettes. A few times my mother came home from work to find all the furniture in the family room moved around. She would get so mad ! I couldn’t help myself though. Through the years I have dabbled in many artistic endeavors including photography, painting and floral design.

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans

Do what you love and love what you do.

I just finished up a guitar I’ve been working on, should have it in my Etsy shop this week. I’m about to start another full size guitar. Debating on doing a Beatles tribute or another abstract.

Out of this world Etsy Front Page

Okay forgive the blatant pun but this Etsy front page really is amazing. Created by duckduckGoosestuff on Etsy, this treasury was on the front page this afternoon and I immediately wanted to share it here. It's not often that you see a truly unique treasury, and the combo in this one is just so cool! I especially love the Orbit pendant, Jellyfish earrings and Gold Retro Rocket ornament.

Her shop is amazing too - just look at all that awesome jewelry! If my budget included treating myself to great handmade adornments, I would happily buy any one of these rings or necklaces. I love her original take on settings and her cool use of color and texture.

A New Look

I've just spent the last couple of hours giving the blog a make-over, and I'm loving the new look! I've lightened it up a bit to make it neater and cleaner looking, and added a third column. Over on the left is where you'll now find any advertising opportunities, such as Project Wonderful ad spaces, as well as links to other blogs and sites I'm following. On the right is a link to my Etsy shop and other places to find me online (Ravelry, indiepublic, etc), and all the other bloggy stuff like the label cloud and archive. Ahhh, organized!

The part I'm really excited about is that I figured out how to work with the HTML and change this around by myself! Normally I'd go running to my web-designer brother to do it for me, but I was determined to learn how to do it. First up is Melody Sage. She creates gorgeous works of art with pen and ink and sells prints and originals in her shop, Rain Garden Arts. Her work is rich with detail and each piece evokes a distinct mood, from optimistic to dark and contemplative.

"The Windows of the Soul"

A recurring theme I see in her work is the melding of human forms with elements from nature. This seems to me a reminder that we are part of the natural world, even when we think we've managed to remove ourselves from it. This has been on my mind a lot lately, so see it in Melody's work strikes a chord with me. And she's clearly not afraid of exploring the darker side of beauty, which I absolutely love!

I sent Melody a list of questions to give us an idea of who she is, what she does, and what it all means for her. Her answers are thoughtful and intriguing. I especially love her advise for other artists. Without further ado, here's Melody!

1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/artisan?

I remember announcing I was going to be an artist when I grew up at the age of three. I am one of those lucky people who were born with a sense of purpose, although there years where I resisted it for my own convoluted reasons. I went through various phases where I said I wanted to be a filmmaker, a geneticist, an art therapist etc. Meanwhile I kept filling sketchbooks, and everyone kept expecting me to become an artist. I am so glad at twenty five that I finally listened to myself at three.

2. How long have you been working with your medium and what first sparked your interest in it?

Frustrated with pencil smudges at a young age, I turned to ink and never looked back. Working with pen is rigorous. An elbow bump can mean the waste of thirty hours, but I like it. The unforgiving medium means I have had to learn to adapt to errors or make fewer of them. I enjoy working with all materials, however. Recently I have begun experimenting with oil paints, archival markers, and pastel. I also like sculpture, although I carry none in the shop yet. On a day to day basis, I think I prefer the intimacy of a small watercolor or drawing I can hold in my lap and concentrate on.

3. What do you find most enjoyable/rewarding about your art/craft?

When I am immersed in a piece, I swing between soaring thrills of exhilaration, and periods of deep calm where word balloons of thought pass through my mind like clouds and dissolve. In particular I love the first pale glimmer of an idea, and the synchronous mistakes that take the work to surprising places. I love the waltz of concept and material, and the hours I forget to eat and do not notice my cup of tea went cold. When I look closely at any one moment I cannot articulate what exactly makes the process so fulfilling, but it is.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your art/craft?

Inspiration is mercurial for me. Sometimes I start a piece with no preconceptions to see what happens, more often I start with an idea. Ideas are like moths. They hover near sudden areas of illumination in the dark of my head, then fly and disappear, unless I pin them into a notebook with a couple descriptive lines or a quick awkward sketch. Later I page through and see the remnants of the silly, strange, and beautiful notions I have caught and forgotten. If the wings of the idea did not turn to dust, and it still has a halo of borrowed light, I begin a picture.

5. What message or values do you wish to convey with your art? What does your art say to the world?

I do not know what my art says to the world, only what it says to me. It speaks in many voices tinny and soft, musical and insistent, murmuring and loud as a thunderclap. If I could distill this into a single message, it would be that magic exists to be seen and created by each of us. Each person, each tree, each thing, each thought, is a precious universe of shared particles, nothing truly is separate, everything is connected.

6. Are there any other creative outlets that you use to express yourself? What are they and what do you enjoy about them?

Oh there are so many! I write poetry and fiction seriously and have been published in fifty plus literary magazines. My tiny squirrel’s nest apartment overlooking Lake Superior is filled with books and plants. I collect orchids, and dream of the day when I can have an actual garden. I take pleasure in dancing and improvising in the kitchen. I like to cut my own hair and dabble in crafts. All these outlets satisfy different aspects of me.

7. Do you have any advice for other artists/artisans?

Please be kind to your fellow artist. No one can understand the creative part of you better. The success of another person does not eclipse you, but casts more light for everyone. Any way you can, find a method to be happy, and make what only you can make.

What's on the horizon for you right now?

I am doing an art bazaar at a local college. This is the start of my career, and the possibilities are exciting.

Snowscape - Handspun Alpaca Merino Silk yarn

I've had a bit of a dry spell for spinning, having been focused on knitting lots of warm Fall accessories for my Etsy shop. My goal is to finish one new yarn each week, starting tonight. I just added another new yarn to the shop, and it's a beauty! "Snowscape" is a luxurious blend of Alpaca, Merino and Silk that is so soft and has a beautiful drape. 125 yards of 2 ply sport weight.

I love the colors in this yarn. Light greys, golds and pinks mix with lots of natural white to create a dreamy winter soft palette. Ths Alpaca also lends a beautiful halo to the yarn that accentuates its delicate beauty.

I bought the roving for this yarn from Erica of Squoosh on Etsy. She also dyed the fiber for the equally dreamy Castle in the Clouds yarn. I love the way she leaves a good amount of white in a lot of her rovings, which creates a beautiful pastel effect. Here's the roving (photo borrowed from listing).

Etsy Mexicoteam Day of the Dead Contest

I was perusing the forums on Ravelry the other day and I came across an announcement for a contest being put on by Mexicoteam on Etsy. The contest involved searching through participating shops to find the Day of the Dead logo in a listing. I poked around the shops (finding a lot of great pieces in the process) and submitted my answers. Well, today I was told that I won! Very cool - I haven't won a contest in about 10 years!

Here are a couple of the talented artists I came across while looking through the mexicoteam shops. At The Cornfield Shop you can find beautiful baby carriers like this one, as well as sock monkeys, jewelry and more!

Norma from Cara Carmina sells absolutely gorgeous art dolls, cards and prints. I absolutely love this plush doll of hers - it's so quirky and cute and kinda spooky (in a really good way).

And here's what I chose as my prize - a set of cards from Cara Carmina featuring her Cyrano Dolls. It was a tough choice, since there were lots of great items available for me to choose from. I can't wait to see them!

Reprieve - Crocheted button-up cowl

I've just listed a new crocheted neck warmer in my Etsy shop tonight. "Reprieve " is crocheted from a super soft wool blend in greys and white, with merlot red lucite buttons.

I love this yarn! This is the third cowl I've made with it and the first 2 have already sold! It is very soft and warm and I like the handspun look and flecks of color. I will be making a few more to replace the ones that have sold. I may even have to make one for me to keep :)

"Cafe au Lait" Fingerless Gloves

I have just added another new pair of wrist warmers to my Etsy shop this evening. "Cafe au Lait " gloves are knit in a beautiful wool blend yarn that is so soft. I am in love with the colors in this yarn - it blends from oatmeal to grey to tawny. So natural looking and comfy!

I also like how they are not a perfectly matched pair. This yarn has looooong color repeats, so I knit both gloves out of one stretch of color. I think this adds to the organic, natural look of the yarn.

The knit gloves and cowls I've listed in my shop so far have been met with a great response! Thanks so much to everyone who has checked them out, and to those who have ordered Black Mustard hand knit accessories! I will be happily knitting away this weekend to get the shop filled back up! Spectrum - Handspun Corriedale yarn

I've just listed another new yarn in my Etsy shop. "Spectrum" is 185 yards of soft and squishy Corriedale in the most beautiful muted rainbow colors.

This was my first time spinning Corriedale, and I really liked it! It's slightly less sproingy than Merino, but still very soft and has a lovely drape.

Here's the roving, purchased from Spindlefrog on Etsy. I love the colors she uses - her shop is a constant source of temptation for me. I bought another roving in similar colors to this one, but it's a BFL/Mohair blend. That will be shoving its way up in the line for my wheel for sure!

Dyeing Retreat with Mom

It's been a while since I've posted... there's been a lot going on in the meantime. I spent 5 days last week visiting my mom in Port Hardy at the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. We stayed in spinning, knitting, and dyeing all week and had a blast! My first few rovings are dried and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Here's a merino/kid mohair blend that is super soft. I can't wait to spin it and see how the yarn looks. It ended up with pretty short color repeats, so I think I might try a single rather than a 2 ply, to keep it from getting too busy.

The other roving I did was a brown merino, which I over-dyed with pink, blue, green and orange. I love over-dyed brown fiber, so I'm looking forward to spinning this one as well.

My birthday present was a dye kit and a whole bunch of fiber - I'm so excited to get into dyeing and playing with color. I can already tell that it's going to be addictive.

Sweetness Cowl on Etsy Front Page!

My brand new "Sweetness" hand knit cowl was featured on the front page of Etsy today!! As far as I know this is the first time one of my pieces has been on the front page - or at least it's the first time I've gotten to see it. What a great birthday present!

Diamond in the Rough - Hand knit wrist warmers

I'm so excited about these new fingerless gloves, now available in my Etsy shop! I've made them with an incredibly soft and cozy 100% SW Merino yarn, with embossed diamonds along the top.

Once again I've got to thank my lovely model Angel for helping me get such great pictures! We have so much fun doing our photo shoots, and I am absolutely thrilled with the results.

Right now these babies are available in Caramel and Grey (as shown). Keep an eye out for lots more colors coming soon! This yarn is quickly becoming one of my all time faves, and there are lots of colors available, so I'll be adding more just as fast as I can knit them!

I want to say a huge thank you to my two lovely co-workers who did their thang in front of the camera for me today. Because of them I am finally able to get my new hand knit Fall accessories into my Etsy shop! We had so much fun on our lunch hour today, and the photos turned out perfect! The first 2 items I've listed are a couple of super-soft and warm cowls made from 100% Baby Alpaca yarn.

Equinox - Handspun Merino Yarn

Here's my latest handspun yarn, which I'm so glad to be able to list in my Etsy shop. "Equinox" is 226 squishy yards of 100% Merino goodness.

Once again I spun this from roving dyed by Kristin at Allspunup. It's always a treat to work with her well-prepped fiber in the most amazing colors. I love the way this turned out!

Knitting Overload

I've been busy today. I've got quite a few things on the go and I spent the day trying to wrap up what I could and get a handle on the rest. I spun, I knitted, I planned and schemed.

My main focus right now is making knitted accessories for Fall to put in my Etsy shop. I've been developing a pattern for a nice fluffy cowl, and after a few attempts, I think I'm getting close to what I want. Here it is in green.

It's made with 100% Baby Alpaca yarn and it is probably the softest thing I've ever felt. The stitch I used, knit on big needles, plays up the softness of the yarn and traps lots of air for warmth. I've also got a button-up version in creamy off-white ready to go, but no photos of it so far.

I am so eager to get these into my shop that I tried to take some pictures with myself as the model today. The pictures turned out okay, but I can only do so much with the camera at arm's length and no way to see the shot I'm capturing... I've enlisted a couple of friends to be my models, and I hope to spend some time with them this weekend. I was fortunate enough to be able to photo my fabric headbands by myself throughout the summer, but this is something I'll need help with.

This last month or so has been crazy at my day job, so I've been going in 5 days a week, and I think it's taking it's toll on my ability to produce things for my shop. I really want to list a new yarn soon, and I'm also still working on a proto-type for some fingerless gloves. I can't wait until I go back to part time - I've really missed having those extra 2 days to craft! Oh well, there's no rush. Fall's not going anywhere, and I know that once I get these pieces finished and photographed right it will be worth the wait.

Some sights from my bike

I've been getting a whole lot of use out of my bike this summer, riding a few times a week in the streets and trails around my house. I've been reminded of the feeling of freedom that biking riding used to bring when I was a kid. Back before I had the convenience of a car and when I could spend all day exploring. One of my favorite places to ride to is Green Timbers park, about a 1/2 hour ride away from my house.

There's a beautiful little lake there, albeit man-made. It's home to ducks, cranes, dragonflies and fish. Even when I've been feeling fairly stressed out and not really in the mood for a bike ride, I get to the lake and sit down, watch the ducks swimming lazily for a few minutes, and can't help but relax. I'll have to take some pictures of those ducks next time I'm there.

I've also been reading Deepak Chopra's "The Essential Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" and this is the perfect setting to settle in and read. It's been a great place to practice feeling more connected with nature and grateful for the perfect little things all around me. I love having a place like this to go to right in the middle of the city!

Mendhi

I was fortunate to be invited to have Mendhi (henna) done for a friend's wedding this weekend. The marriage ceremony was yesterday, and on Wednesday night they had 2 ladies come to the house to do everyone's hands.

These women were so talented, and quick! Both of my hands took only about 15 minutes, for the backs as well as the palms. They had a tent set up in the yard and close to 50 women came throughout the evening to get their Mendhi done. Luckily I was one of the first ones there, because I had to let it sit without touching anything for at least 2 hours (I ended up leaving it on for about 4). Once the initial paste dried, it was moistened with a lemon juice and sugar mixture, and then warmed by holding our hands over a pan of hot cloves. I spent quite a long time over the cloves - they were so toasty warm! I think that's why mine turned out so dark, especially on the palms.

Some people have told me this means that my mother-in-law will love me a great deal, others have said it's the husband who's love is predicted by dark Mendhi. Either way, I'd say it's a good sign!

Bitten - Handspun SW Merino yarn

I've just added my newest handspun yarn to my Etsy shop. The colors remind me equally of a venomous snake bite and the plum tree in my yard that is heavy with ripe purple plums.

"Bitten" is 266 yards of squishy SW Merino.

The roving was purchased from Allie of Dyingtoknit on Etsy. This was apparently one of her first dye jobs - she's a pretty talented young lady! And she's only 15 years old! Someone has a promising career in the fiber world ahead of her.

Enchanted - Handspun Merino Alpaca Yarn

I've been away for about a week - camping in beautiful Tofino and Bamfield, BC. I will have pictures to post soon! I had an amazing time, but I sure missed my spinning wheel - I spent more quality time with Goliath than any other member of my multi-species family the first night I got home! Castle in the Clouds - BFL Handspun yarn

Well, my newest handspun yarn sold in my Etsy shop in record time. Thanks to a lovely repeat customer, it was snapped up within about 10 minutes! Still, I couldn't resist posting a few pictures of it because I was really pleased with how the shots turned out, as well as with the yarn itself.

"Castle in the Clouds" is 160 yards of the softest BFL around.

I love BFL, and this really was some amazing fiber. The previous rovings I've bought have been smooth and lustrous, but not really fuzzy soft. This one was all that - check out that gorgeous halo. So soft! As soon as I first squished the roving in my hands, I knew it was going to be amazing.

The roving was purchased from Squoosh on Etsy. I was surprised how pale the colors turned out. I wasn't expecting that, but I really love the way it ended up. One of the funnest parts of spinning for me has been seeing the transformation from roving to yarn. Quite often it's a pleasant surprise! Here's the roving:

I've got another one of her rovings on the way. It's Alpaca/Merino/Silk in earth tones. I cannot wait to see it!

Spin-A-Long fun!

I have finished spinning my yarn for the AllSpunUp spin-a-long! How it worked is that a number of people signed up to purchase fiber dyed in the same colorway and then we'll all spin them up and share the pictures. It will be very interesting to see how the same fiber in the same colors will undoubtedly produce different effects with each spinner.

Here's mine - "Neptune's Dream" 80% Merino, 20% Silk, 100% gorgeous! Kristin really out-did herself with these colors.

This blend is heavenly to spin and the yarn is so soft, with a bit of shine from the silk. I am so happy with the way it turned out. It should create a striped effect when it's knitted up, with fairly prominent solid aqua and navy stripes separated by the blended yellow/orange/brown bits. It was very interesting to spin it, and I hope someone will find it just as fun to knit with. That's right, it's for sale in my Etsy shop!

This is what the original roving looked like. Isn't it lovely? I can't wait to see all the other yarns, and I sure hope she does another one of these soon!

Earth Child - Merino Alpaca handspun yarn

Well, it's been a while. Pemberton was an interesting experience - after getting caught in the Airport snag on the Thursday night, I decided to defect and head home early on Friday. I caught a Greyhound bus and got home by about 9pm. I just didn't relish the idea of spending another 3 days in chaos. I know, I know. The music was amazing. But you know what? Having gotten swept up in all the hype of the festival, I never really stopped to ask myself if any of these bands were all that high on my list of favorites. It's too bad it was a lesson that cost me over $300, but I think I made the right decision. The rest of the weekend I experienced a lot of cool coincidences, connections with great people, etc. that lead me to think I way wise to head home when I did.

Anyway, I'm back to my spinning, after having hurt my wrist fairly bad and having to hold off for a couple weeks. Man, did I miss it! The fiber I chose to get back into it was perfect! It's 70% SW Merino, 30% Alpaca, dyed by the incredible Kristin of AllSpunUp on Etsy.

I am so happy with how this yarn turned out! Besides the fact that these are "my colors", this fiber blend spins up soooo soft and squishy.

Gearing up for the Pemberton Music Festival

A week from today I will head up for the Pemberton Festival just past beautiful Whistler, BC. I can't wait - it's going to be 3 days of music from Tom Petty to The Tragically Hip to Jay-Z (my guilty pleasure gansta rap fix)! I'm also really looking forward to seeing some of the "smaller" acts like My Morning Jacket and Buck 65, and Wolfmother, as well as discovering some new favorites I'm sure! It's coming up fast, and though I am extremely stoked to go, there are also a few projects I'd like to finish first.

I've added a few more cotton headbands to my Etsy shop and there are more to come. On the weekend I rounded up some more wonderful fabrics and got them them all cut and ready to go. I've got 9 completed headbands now, which I'll be listing over the next few days. There are some gorgeous batiks and Japanese fabrics among others!

I've also got a couple of yarns that I hope to have listed before I leave. Maybe I'll even have some pictures in the next couple of days! For now though, here's one more headband!

Featured in a BnR treasury on Etsy

I was trolling through the treasuries on Etsy this afternoon and was thrilled to find I had been featured in 3 treasuries all at the same time!!! One of them was a BnR - the first one I've been in. BnR, for all you non-Etsians, stands for Buy and Replace. The idea is that if you buy one of the items featured, you get to replace that item with one of your own and hopefully someone will buy from you to get your spot. There are countless BnR threads in the forums, but I've always thought the treasury version was way cooler! I am so grateful to Tracey from Moment in the Sun on Etsy for choosing to put my "Namaste" wristlet in her treasury.

I actually met Tracey in person when I was visiting my friend Julie from Superfly Lullabies at a local craft show. Tracey was at the next table over and I was drawn to her beautiful hand-made papercrafts, including notebooks, tags and envelopes like the ones below. Before long we found out we both sold on Etsy and had a great conversation about our experiences with it.

Tracey also has a supplies shop called Moment in Time, where she sells a variety of scrapbooking supplies, buttons, cardstock and fabric. I love the colors in this assortment of cardstock.

Couldn't resist one more picture - isn't this fabric awesome?! You might just find it popping up in a Black Mustard headband one of these days (wink wink).

Dappled - SW Merino handspun yarn

It was spun from gorgeous hand-dyed AllSpunUp roving. After the last yarn I spun, which took quite a long time to finish, I wanted a quick and soothing spin. This roving was a dream to work with, and I love how the colors turned out!

I've just made my first trade with a fellow crafter on Etsy. To tell the truth I feel a little starstruck because it was one of the very first sellers I ever took notice of on Etsy, long before I started selling. Val of Actual Size Creations makes incredible knitting messenger bags, which I have been lusting after since I first saw them in their well-deserved spot on Etsy's front page. On my current working-part-time budget, I haven't been able to justify buying one yet but I dreamed of treating myself to one of her bags someday. Well, I made a comment on a Ravelry update post she made about how much I loved her work and she mentioned that she's always open to trade and that she liked my handspun yarns. Long story short, this bag is going to be mine!!!

It looks incredibly well-made and functional, as well as really unique (I love the zigzag of the needle pockets on the front!) I cannot wait to get it (it's on its way to me now). Val also sells beautifully dyed sock yarns in her shop - check them out!!! This one's my fave.

Oh, and my end of the bargain was this handspun yarn, and a couple of fabric headbands.

"Summer Showers" is 276 yards of fingering weight BFL, dyed by the amazing Kristin at AllSpunUp. I hope she likes it as much as I know I'm going to love my bag!

Plaything - Merino handspun yarn

I have just added this yarn to my Etsy shop tonight. "Plaything" is 235 yards of 100% Merino yumminess.

It was spun from the FreckleFaceFibers roving I mentioned a few days ago. Finished it a little later than I'd hoped, what with the spinning workshop and hanging out with my mom, who was staying with me for a week or so. But, it's in the shop now and I'm quite happy with the way it turned out!

Every now and then I see a treasury on Etsy's front page that just blows me away. This is one of those amazing treasuries.

That top row is just absolute perfection! Talk about an artist's eye for combining colors and theme to create a gorgeous, relaxing collection. This one was put together by Zygopsyche and I've noticed quite a few front pages with that name on them. Beautiful!

Spinning workshop round 2

Today my mom and I attended Judith MacKenzie McCuin's spinning workshop, organized by Lynne at Knitopia Wools Co. The class was "Spinning for Weaving" and although I have yet to get into weaving and it may be some time before I do, I took notes and tried to absorb as much information as I could to file away for use at a later date. We learned a lot about twist and yarn construction, and got a few pointers on making some gorgeous art yarns to use to add texture to woven cloth.

This woman is incredible - a wealth of knowledge and experience. Listening to her talk about fiber and textiles is absolutely mesmerizing. She discussed everything from the mystical and spiritual reasoning for direction of spin used in Andean spinning and weaving to some of the most innovative and original ideas in weaving today. I really got a better appreciation for the tradition of fiber arts and textile design, a small taste of the history there. Very interesting stuff! I also bought a copy of her book, which I am very eager to read through.

Although the spinning part of the workshop was great and I was able to tweak and improve a lot of my methods, what ended up being the highlight of the day was when I got to play with the drum carder and an assortment of fiber to make a nice big fluffy spinning batt to take home! Here it is, my first foray into combining colors for spinning!

I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. It was so, so, so much fun, happily flinging bits of color onto the carder and watching them blend and become this gorgeous batt! I had at my disposal a lot of merino, some kid mohair locks and beautiful shiny silk in a broad spectrum of colors and textures.

Having never dyed or carded colored fiber before, this was a new and exciting treat for me. Lynne, who has an incredible eye for color and makes beautiful hand-dyed rovings, such as the one I used to make this yarn, has been telling my mom and I for quite some time that we need to get into dyeing. After seeing how much fun it is to work with color, I told her that she was right! To which she replied, "I know, color just makes you pee!" I couldn't put it better. I absolutely can't wait to see how this spins up!

I am really looking forward to tomorrow's class, which is "Spinning for Socks". That's something I'll be able to put to more immediate use. Exciting stuff!
